About me

Hi, I’m Sally Harney, Ph.D., LPC, NCC, ACS — Owner and Clinical Director of Neutral Ground Counseling Group®.

My pronouns are she/her/hers. My ethnic heritage is half Irish and half Egyptian, and my lived experiences inform how I understand identity and culture, including how social systems shape self-perception and how others perceive and respond to our culture and identity.

My Ph.D. in Sociology with a specialization in gender shapes how I help clients recognize how societal expectations have shaped their sense of self.

I am licensed in Virginia, Washington D.C., and Colorado, where I provide psychotherapy for teens (12+) and adults. I offer in-person sessions in Fairfax, Virginia and telehealth services throughout Virginia, Washington D.C., and Colorado. Clients located in Washington D.C. and Colorado are seen on a self-pay basis.

I am WPATH SOC8 Certified and provide gender-affirming care aligned with established standards.

In addition to clinical practice, I am an Approved Clinical Supervisor and provide structured, development-focused supervision for Residents-in-Counseling and interns.

Outside of work, you’ll often find me gardening, reading, hiking or traveling with family and friends.

What I do and who I work with

I specialize in trauma therapy and gender-affirming therapy for teens (12+) and adults experiencing gender dysphoria, PTSD, anxiety, and depression.

I help individuals process a wide range of traumatic experiences, including childhood abuse, sexual assault, combat or service-related trauma, natural disasters, and other events that have disrupted safety or self-perception. Our work focuses on reprocessing those experiences so they are no longer impacting daily functioning, relationships, or how you see yourself.

I also support individuals navigating gender exploration and transition. Many of my clients are transgender or non-binary, and some are also neurodivergent. For many, gender dysphoria reflects the strain of living in ways that have not fully aligned with who they are, often for years. Together, we explore your identity in ways that help you feel more settled and secure in who you are.

Many of the individuals I work with are connected to military service — communities where identity, environment, and trauma often overlap. I provide a safe space where people can feel seen and heard and explore their experiences without minimizing what they have lived through.

How I work with my clients

I use EMDR as a primary trauma treatment modality within a trauma-focused, person-centered framework. I also provide gender-affirming care that is collaborative and exploratory, grounded in established standards and focused on strengthening your sense of self.

In our work together, we look at how experiences — including trauma and identity-based stress — have shaped coping patterns and self-perception. Rather than only managing symptoms, we address what has been driving them.

When clinically appropriate, I integrate approaches such as CBT, ACT, and EFT to support emotional regulation, relational clarity, and boundary-setting. Therapy is structured but thoughtful, and paced to your needs.

The goal is helping you feel more steady in your life and more at ease in who you are.
